Roaring for Change: Amplifying Voices in the Community Through Literacy A CMC GEM Initiative

Literacy remains a significant challenge in the Philippines. According to the World Bank’s 2022 data on learning poverty, nearly 90% of Filipino children aged 10 struggle with reading or comprehending simple text. This alarming data highlights the immediate need for intervention and highlights the long-term impact on children’s futures. Literacy is not just a skill; it is the foundation of dreams, the key to unlocking potential, and the spark that can light up entire communities. In response to this pressing issue, the Guild of English Majors (GEM) from the College of Teacher Education at Central Mindanao Colleges has initiated “Literati 2024: Inspiring Lifelong Learners,” held in Purok Kamatis, Kidapawan City. With the theme “Empowering Voices through Literacy,” the event aimed to nurture a love for reading and writing while equipping participants with the tools to express themselves through the written word. Every word shared was a step toward empowerment, and every sentence spoken was a voice being heard. In partnership with the Center for Social Action, the event featured engaging activities such as storytelling, big book sessions, and reading circles—designed to amplify creativity, foster literacy, and inspire active community participation. As children and adults immersed themselves in the world of books, the palpable sense of excitement and curiosity served as a reminder that the power of literacy lies not just in reading words, but in forging connections, sparking ideas, and unleashing dreams. (Translation: “I am deeply grateful for ‘Literati’24’ because it gave my child the opportunity to enjoy reading and learning happily. Events like this are a huge help for families like ours.”)A Barangay Day Care worker also reflected on the scarcity of literacy opportunities in the community, observing the children’s excitement during storytelling sessions. She remarked, “Nanghinaut ko nga magpadayon pa ang ingon ani nga mga kalihokan, kay ang literacy usa ka basihanan sa mas maayong kaugmaon.” (Translation: “I hope that events like this continue because literacy is the foundation for a better future.”)Literati’24 is not merely an event; it is a call to action for all of us. It serves as a reminder that literacy should be prioritized every day, not just in designated months. This initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). Through collaborative efforts, we can create a ripple effect—empowering communities through literacy and promoting sustainable growth, unlocking new possibilities for individuals and society alike. The truth is, the power to change lives is in our hands. With the gift of literacy, we offer more than just education; we offer hope. As Nelson Mandela once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Each book opened and every story told is a step toward a brighter future. It is in these small, intentional acts of kindness that we can make a profound difference. In the words of American educator Rita Pierson, “Every child deserves a champion—an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists that they become the best that they can be.”We are called to champion literacy, not just as an event but as a culture—a culture that continues to inspire and empower learners beyond the pages of books. Literati’24 stands as a testament to the impact of collective action, where our community unites to roar for the potential of every learner. With initiatives like this, we contribute to a larger movement—a movement toward equality, opportunity, and lifelong learning.Let us continue to roar for change and lead with kindness, investing in literacy, and empowering voices in every corner of our community. Together, we can create a world where everyone has the chance to read, write, and rise. Your support, your time, and your heart can be the key to unlocking the future. Feature by Erolle Linus T. This marked the beginning of a bold new chapter for student leadership in the realm of internationalization and sustainable development. PRISM, the official student arm of the Center for International Affairs and Linkages (CIAL), has long been a training ground for globally minded student leaders. CIAL Backs CABME Leads Launch Through Global Forum on Network Marketing and Leadership

The College of Accountancy, Business, and Management Education (CABME) of Central Mindanao Colleges (CMC), in partnership with the Center for International Affairs and Linkages (CIAL), successfully launched its premier academic enrichment program—CABME Leads: A Semester of Innovation, Leadership, and Global Impact—on July 18, 2025, through the International Symposium on Network Marketing held at the CMC Annex. This kickoff activity brought together 50 selected CABME students for a transformative discussion on network marketing as a contemporary and empowering business model. The initiative, strongly aligned with the institution’s commitment to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and internationalization, seeks to nurture globally competent, ethically grounded, and innovation-driven student leaders. At the center of the symposium was Ms. Bianca Stanley, guest panelist from Lifestyle Management Group Australia. With three university degrees and over 15 years of experience in corporate leadership across government and private sectors, Ms. Stanley shared her personal journey of pivoting from the corporate world to becoming a global wellness entrepreneur. Her business, which began 12 years ago in the health and fitness sector, now operates in multiple countries with personal investments exceeding $2.5 million USD—a testament to the power of aligning one’s passion with purpose. Joining Ms. Stanley was Mr. Alfe Keith Apalit, an MBA graduate of Ateneo de Davao University and seasoned leader in the network marketing industry. Their engaging panel discussion provided students with actionable insights on entrepreneurship, leadership, branding, and ethical decision-making within the context of direct selling and modern income systems. With the active support of CIAL, the event elevated CMC’s internationalization efforts by incorporating global best practices, entrepreneurial models, and cross-border success stories. The open forum further encouraged students to evaluate innovative income systems and their relevance in today’s evolving market. As the opening salvo of the CABME Leads program, the symposium laid the foundation for a semester of student-led, SDG-aligned, and internationally supported academic activities designed to develop the next generation of business and community leaders. #CABMELeads2025#CMCInternationalization#CIALSupports#NetworkMarketingForum#GlobalLeadership#EntrepreneurshipEducation#SDG4#SDG8#SDG17 #LifeByDesign
