CMC Advances Community Literacy Through Pag-amUmmah BASAyanihan Initiative

Empowering communities begins with equipping educators who can transform learning into lasting impact

Central Mindanao Colleges, through the Center for Social Action, continues to strengthen its commitment to community engagement and educational empowerment through the Pag-amUmmah BASAyanihan Initiative. This capacity building program focuses on training tutors to promote community literacy and educational development.

Held on April 24, 2026 at the Students’ Activity Center, the initiative gathered students, faculty, and partner institutions in a unified effort to address literacy gaps and strengthen community-based education.

Anchored on service, collaboration, and inclusive development, the Pag-amUmmah Banner Program serves as CMC’s framework for outreach and social transformation. Through BASAyanihan, participants were equipped with essential competencies in literacy instruction, tutorial strategies, and learner engagement. This prepares them to deliver responsive and meaningful educational support in diverse communities.

The program combined theory and practice and integrated psychosocial support approaches to address learners’ holistic needs. Students from the College of Teacher Education, Social Work, and Psychology were trained as literacy tutors and Youth Development Workers, reinforcing a multidisciplinary approach to community engagement.

In support of national literacy efforts, the initiative complements the TARA, BASA! Tutoring Program of the Department of Social Welfare and Development, in coordination with the Department of Education. This strengthens reading proficiency and foundational learning among child beneficiaries.

DSWD speakers shared expertise in literacy education, community engagement, and psychosocial development, ensuring the program’s relevance and impact.

Aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 1 No Poverty, Sustainable Development Goal 4 Quality Education, and Sustainable Development Goal 17 Partnerships for the Goals, the initiative reflects CMC’s commitment to inclusive education, institutional collaboration, and social responsibility.

More than a training program, BASAyanihan is a platform for developing socially responsive leaders. It empowers students to serve, lead, and create meaningful change through education.

Central Mindanao Colleges continues to lead in transforming education into service, empowering learners as catalysts of change, and advancing communities through literacy, leadership, and Excellence Without Borders.
