This
is the driving force behind Pagkat-on: Citizenโs Arrest Seminar, hosted on
December 6, 2024, by Central Mindanao Colleges College of Criminal Justice
Education (CMC-CCJE).
The
event reflects the Criminology programโs commitment to justice and public
safety, bringing together local leaders and citizens in a collaborative effort
to cultivate knowledge, empowerment, and action.
At
the heart of the event is Pagkat-on, a seminar focused on equipping citizens
with the knowledge of their legal rights and responsibilities when making a
citizenโs arrest. Led by PCpl Hazel Joy Gimena, the session provides
participants with a deep understanding of lawful procedures, empowering them to
act responsibly in situations that demand intervention. โThis seminar is about
bridging the gap between the community and the law,โ says Jorhanie K. Alon,
CCJE Student Council Governor. โItโs not just about knowing the law but knowing
how to uphold it with dignity and respect.โ
The
event also marks two significant milestones: the turnover of 10 flashlights and
10 handcuffs to Barangay Patrollers and Barangay Police, and the signing of a
partnership agreement between CMC-CCJE and Barangay Paco.
These
initiatives reflect Central Mindanao Collegesโ commitment to advancing
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): SDG 4 (Quality Education) through
ensuring inclusive and equitable access to legal literacy, SDG 16 (Peace,
Justice, and Strong Institutions) through empowering communities to uphold
justice and safety, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through cultivating
collaboration between educational institutions and local government units.
โThrough
these initiatives, we aim to make education a driving force for justice and
peace,โ said Dr. Cynthia S. Asuncion, President of CMC. โPartnerships and
programs like Pagkat-on are building a culture of accountability and
collaboration that transforms communities into safe, empowered, and resilient
spaces.โ These efforts highlight CMCโs dedication to bridging academic
excellence with grassroots transformation, promoting sustainable development at
all levels.
