Central
Mindanao Colleges (CMC) recently organized Lihok ug Paglambo: A
Seminar-Workshop on Leadership and Social Advocacy on Poverty Eradication, held
on October 31, 2024, at the Students Activity Center.
This
event, spearheaded by the CMC Junior Social Workers Association of the
Philippines and the CMC Social Work Department, inspired and equipped students
with the knowledge and skills necessary to combat poverty and inequality.
“Overcoming
poverty is not a gesture of charity. It is an act of justice. It is the
protection of a fundamental human right, the right to dignity and a decent
life,” said Nelson Mandela. This seminar-workshop aligned with the Sustainable
Development Goals and highlighted CMC’s commitment to promoting a culture of
excellence and social responsibility. Participants engaged in thought-provoking
discussions, workshops, and activities designed to deepen their understanding
of social injustices and develop proactive solutions.
Ms.
Sharlyn Armstrong, Program Head of the CMC Social Work Department, emphasized
the importance of this initiative: “Our commitment is to empower senior high
school and Social Work students by providing them with essential leadership
skills and a deep understanding of poverty. We are dedicated to nurturing
future leaders who are well-equipped to drive social change and advocate for a
more equitable society.”
The
event also featured a keynote address by Kidapawan City Mayor Atty. Jose Paolo
Evangelista. Mayor Evangelista shared his insights on leadership and advocacy,
inspiring young leaders with his experiences and accomplishments in
transforming Kidapawan City. His address emphasized the importance of proactive
leadership and community engagement in driving social change.
School
President Dr. Cynthia Asuncion remarked, “This seminar-workshop is a testament
to our commitment to social responsibility and academic excellence. We believe
in empowering our students to become catalysts for change in their
communities.”
Participants
left the event with a renewed sense of purpose and actionable plans. One
student shared, “This workshop has given me the tools and confidence to make a
real difference in my community. I feel more prepared to tackle social issues
head-on.”
This
seminar-workshop is a shining example of CMC’s dedication to student success,
quality education, and holistic development. With the integration of leadership
training and social advocacy into their curriculum, CMC ensures that students
are not only academically proficient but also socially conscious and ready to
contribute meaningfully to society.
CMC
remains steadfast in its commitment to creating a nurturing environment that
promotes academic excellence, social responsibility, and the holistic
development of its students. Through initiatives like this, CMC continues to
empower its students to become proactive leaders and advocates for a more
equitable and just society.
As
Dr. Asuncion aptly put it, “Let us all take this opportunity to act, to lead,
and to make a difference. Together, we can build a future where every
individual has the chance to thrive.”
