Empowering Youth through Literacy and Transformational Leadership

Central Mindanao Colleges (CMC) strengthened its commitment to literacy and community-centered education in celebration of National Reading Day on November 27, 2025, through its active participation in the Exploratory Meeting and Program Orientation for the Tara, Basa! Tutoring Program.

The meeting, held on November 24, 2025 at the CMC Accreditation Office, was led by the CMC Social Work Department and served as a strategic platform to reinforce collaboration among Higher Education Institutions and government agencies in advancing literacy development.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office XII served as the event’s resource partner, presenting the program’s components, implementation procedures, tutor responsibilities, Youth Development Worker roles, and screening criteria for identifying eligible student beneficiaries.

As part of National Reading Day, the orientation emphasized the importance of supporting struggling readers and promoting a stronger culture of reading among Filipino learners. Mrs. Sharlyn Lee S. Armstrong, Program Head of the Social Work Department, highlighted the crucial role of HEIs in promoting educational equity and empowering youth through structured literacy interventions.

The meeting gathered academic leaders and faculty representatives from the College of Teacher Education, Psychology Department, Center for Social Action, and the Social Work Department. Discussions focused on strengthening interdepartmental collaboration, service-learning initiatives, and sustainable program implementation to ensure long-term student engagement and literacy support within partner communities.

CMC expressed full support for the Tara, Basa! Tutoring Program, underscoring its dedication to meaningful community engagement, learner transformation, and proactive response to national literacy needs.
