Central Mindanao Colleges’ Office of the Graduate School Education
(GSE), in collaboration with the Research and Development Office, conducted
an online paper presentation on August 6, 2022, with the theme, “Essential Role of
Research in Shaping Societal and Economic Development.” The activity has
aimed in strengthening the research methods and designs that impact
researchers in its CMCian community.
Close to 370 participants from the Graduate School Education students,
faculty, and guests attended the virtual program. Setting up the mood, program
host Ms. Marie Cris Molina facilitated the leveling of expectations and
acknowledgment of participants.
Dr. Gemma N. Kintanar, the Dean of Graduate School, in her welcome
address emphasized the theme of developing students’ passion in strengthening
the research culture in the institution. “In response to one of the many highlights
cited in the CHED Memo 15 series of 2019, we are here to disseminate the
research outputs of our graduates. Each student should be able to present her
paper at conferences and at the same time publish his/her output in a refereed
journal.” she quipped.
Plenary speaker Dr. Felix C. Chavez highlighted AmBisyon 2040, which
emphasized the dreams and aspirations of the average Filipino for 2040. He cited
that The AmBisyon Natin 2040 is a picture of the future that shows what Filipino
people want for themselves and their country in the next 25 years. It talks about
how people want to live and what the country will be like in 2040.
Dr. Chavez further discussed on how to ensure social and economic
progress and why there is a need to conduct research. The role of research
greatly contributes to our economic growth since it solves issues and finds solutions
that generate a wide array of benefits for policy making.
Furthermore, the presentation ended with a line graph comparing
publication records from a web of science database from 1999 to 2020 and a
graph showing the Philippines’ lack of adequate and technically capable
Research and Development manpower. According to the graph, the Philippines
has the fewest publications, implying that we should invest in research to boost
economic growth and address societal issues.
Subsequently, participants and paper presenters were led to their
respective virtual breakout rooms for the paper presentation. These breakout
rooms were facilitated by the newly-elected GSE Student Council Officers as the
session managers.
