CMC-GSE Brings Support to 66 Indigenous Learners in Duwow Elementary School
Magpet, North Cotabato – The Graduate School Education (GSE) of Central Mindanao Colleges (CMC) conducted an outreach program last April 22, 2023, benefiting at least 66 pupils from Duwow Elementary School, an Indigenous People (IP) community situated in the far-flung Barangay Manobo. The school is an adopted community of CMC, requiring a 2-hour hike to reach.
Dr. Gemma N. Kintanar, the GSE Dean, assured the learners that regular site monitoring and assessment would be conducted to address their needs. She added that the institution remains committed to its undertaking, and the event would be concluded with the signing of a deed of acceptance. “CMC-Graduate School Education, represented by the Graduate School Education Student Council (GSESC) officers, went beyond the distance to express our love and support for your education,” Dr. Kintanar said.
During the outreach program, learners received slippers, reading materials, and snacks, while the school community received fruit-bearing tree seedlings for future income generation. The program’s objective was to promote literacy among learners, with GSESC officers guiding them in reading and comprehending story passages.
An initial assessment was conducted through an interview with Mr. Kevin C. Sagayno, Duwow Elementary School’s Head Teacher, as basis for future visits. Some learners, parents, and teachers were also asked about their struggles and challenges.
Mr. Sagayno expressed gratitude for being chosen as an officially adopted school of CMC-GSE, stating that their school had not received visitors for a while and that usually, visitors’ first visits would also be their last.
Nonetheless, he added that the school had progressed significantly in recent years.
Despite the distance barriers, CMC pledged to continue creating meaningful connections with the teachers and learners of Duwow Elementary School.
