The CMC Lions’ Quill took part in a conference titled Journalism Under Surveillance | World Press Freedom Day 2022. The Journalism Studies Association of the Philippines Inc. (JSAP) and the Philippine Press Institute jointly organized the said international event, which was broadcast live on Zoom on May 2, 2022, and attended by around 165 media professionals and students. Hanns Seidel Foundation โ Philippines is supporting the forum.
The international forum was kicked off with remarks from PPI Chairman Rolando G. Estabillo and Publisher, Atty. Prof. Cherry Pebre, JSAP Secretary, and Goetz Heinicke, Resident Representative to the Philippines. It also highlighted reactions Asst. Prof. Lucia Tangi, JSAP Chair – Mr. Jonathan de Santos, National Union of Journalists of the Philippines – Ms. Amalia Cabusao, PPI Vice President & Trustee for Mindanao, Mindanao Times – Prof. Roland Simbulan, Political Analyst, Former UP Faculty Regent. Prof. Christian Esguerra, JSAP Auditor, presented a Media Freedom Declaration at the end of the session.
World Press Freedom Day honors the essential values of press freedom by analyzing press freedom around the world, supporting the press against attacks on its independence, and honoring journalists who have died in the line of duty. This virtual symposium focused on digital challenges to media and press freedom as part of the World Press Freedom Day theme of “Journalism under Surveillance.”
The Philippine Press Institute (PPI), also known as the national association of newspapers and the country’s oldest professional media organization, is a non-stock, non-profit private organization with the primary mission of defending press freedom and promoting ethical standards for the professional development of Filipino journalists. It was founded in 1964 and revived in 1987 after being dormant from 1972 to 1986 due to martial law. When the reconstituted Board of Governors met for the first time on July 3, 1986, the Institute was formally revived. On June 8, 1987, the agency was created under Philippine legislation.
